I created a landscape inspired by machair, a beautiful type of grassland unique to coastal regions in Scotland and Ireland. Machair is closely tied to crofting, a type of agriculture that allows fields to lay fallow, encouraging a wide variety of wildflowers to grow. Crofting supports this special ecosystem that boasts high biodiversity and rare native species like the great yellow bumblebee, which you can spy in this illustration, hidden among the flowers.
