Growing up in Tanzania, I have fond memories of visiting our country’s various national parks and game reserves. My father used to fly bush planes such as Cessnas and Pipers from our home city of Dar-Es-Salaam to take us to the Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Selous Game Reserve. I vividly remember being in awe of witnessing the great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti and the snow atop Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tanzania’s wildlife and warm culture is a beautiful ode to the rich culture that is a mix of Bantu and Arabic influences also known as the Swahili Coast. I hope this map evokes a sense of exploration and curiosity in you. Karibu Tanzania!
This place is special to me because Ohio is where I have been calling home for the last three years. People may call Ohio as ‘the middle of nowhere’ or ‘a state of cornfields’, but there are actually great places to visit and experience. As an art and nature lover, I have put together a map that would encourage people to come and visit Ohio to experience the beautiful art museums and many natural wonders. I would love people to see this map and think of Ohio as a destination for cultural explorers and embrace more art & nature every day.
This place is special to me because this is where I got my start as an artist/entrepreneur. In my map I included places where people can use their hands and try different crafts, support local artists’ merchandise, and gather inspiration. I want to make more maps that highlight creative hubs in different areas around my city.
My cousin Kirsten and I meet for breakfast about every three weeks. For years, we went to the same two or three places. About two years ago, we decided that we would try a new restaurant every time we went to breakfast. This map is a record of the restaurants we tried out in the past two years. The limiting factor (being Los Angeles) was traffic, so we mostly went places between our two houses in the west end of the San Fernando Valley.
Clinton Hill is a treelined Brooklyn neighborhood where artists, writers, makers, students and creatives have lived throughout history, and continue to make their marks today. Spaces for creating, thinking, and collaborating dot the map, creating an atmosphere that's ever-evolving against a backdrop of historic brick row houses and brownstones.
My map depicts the many cafes and community spaces that celebrate the arts, and even a few places that do both (like the women-run Relationships cafe and Playground Coffee Shop). There's imaginative spaces where you can sip coffee surrounded by modern art, places that imagine a more intentionally-designed food system, shops with vintage clothing and furniture, destinations for modern art and music, and even a few historic (maybe unofficial) arts landmarks. It's a special place that has fueled my creativity for years, and I hope you'll find some inspiration here, too.
This place is special to me, there are sweet memories when I was a teenager. I like to walk on the beach in sunset, exploring the island with my friends, and have a good tropical night party. Nusa Lembongan is an island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia. It is part of a group of three islands that make up the Nusa Penida district, of which it is the most famous.
As my years of university passed by so fast, I wanted to honor some of my favourite places in Chapel Hill. I've laughed, cried, explored, pulled all-nighters, worked, and ate my way through this city, and am happy to be able to call it my home.
This place is special to me because I moved here blindly for an internship and now 2 years later, I have fallen in love with this amazingly little city. I didn't know what I was moving to - wheat? Cows? There's that if you drive out long enough, but turns out there's great food, great beer, and an amazing art community right outside my doorstep. It's been pleasant surprise every single day!
This place is special to me because I now call it home. Two years ago we moved from the city of Bordeaux, to this golden sweet wine producing region of France where the fall morning mist causes the grapes to have “noble rot”, creating a high concentration of sugar in the grapes before they’re picked and made into wine. The landscapes are beautiful here. Sauternes is home to Chateau Yquem, a wine so special, that it’s the only Premier Grand Cru classé “Superior” in the world.
This place is special to me because I grew up here. I like to show all the great attractions and draw them in my style. I have done this map before in a much looser format. This is a more geographically correct version. I hope you enjoy looking at it as well as coming here for a visit sometime.
This place is special to me because these are all of my favorite hiding spots during the cold months of winter. My map is filled with some of my very favorite comfort foods and places to stop for a tea or coffee. I also like visiting the botanical center or Jordan's Jungles so I can start dreaming of spring and what I will plant in my garden.
his place is special to me because I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to live and work here for the past year. Rio is an impossible city; full of breathtaking beauty, frustrations, joy, and complications. Its busyness and hustle lie in stark contrast to the unmovable tranquility of the mountains and ocean that cradle the city. Although this map may seem jam packed with details, I actually had a tough time paring down the places and references I included!
Being invited on holiday ten years ago by family friends when I was just 15 was the beginning of many years of adventures in this special town in Austria. Their love for it prompted it to become a home from home for them and I am privileged to have shared many trips, celebrating birthdays, Christmas and seeing in New Year surrounded by family and friends. I learned to ski in these beautiful mountains and have spent many hours having fun exploring the town and the local area. Schladming is special to me not only because of the breath-taking scenery, beautiful churches and quirky bars and restaurants but because of the memories I have made there with the people I love. My next visit in a few short weeks will see us toasting in 2020 and may my adventures long continue in this beautiful little place.
