Some of the highlights of this beautiful English county. And also some of the well known and some less well known foodie treats. For example Yarg cheese which is wrapped in nettles... Star Gazey pie - a fish pie with distinctive features...and hevva (heavy) cake scored to look like fishing nets
If there is heaven on earth than it is only here.. Beautiful city but sad that terrorists from Pakistan keep attacking this place. Beautiful Dal lake with houseboat stay. From Srinagar we drove towards Kargil. One of the difficult war at such altitude was won by India. During winter time temperature goes down to -60 degree. One of the coldest inhabited place in the world. At the end of the day we stayed at Kargil.
On day 2 we drove from Kargil to Lamayuru passing one of the difficult mountain pass called Zozila. Lamayuru is a small beautiful Buddhist town in Ladakh region. From now onwards landscape changed drastically. It became more cold and dry in compare to Srinagar. We danced on the road. Romantic place. Hotel Moonland was one nice little guesthouse with lot of flowers around it! Stayed overnight here.
From Lamayuru we reached Leh on day 3. In-between we visited few beautiful locations. Well let me tell you every place in Leh-Ladakh region is picture perfect. We visited meeting point of Indus and Zanskar river. Had lunch on the way at Pattharsaheb gurudwara. In the evening we reached Leh town and checked in at Hotel Mahey retreat. Beautiful snow mountain view from the room. Now it started little altitude problem while walking for the dinner at Gizmo. We had yum honey ginger lemon and yak cheese pizza!!
On day 4 we visited places around Leh. In the morning we went to Hemis Monastery. One of the oldest and beautiful monastery in this region. On the way back we stopped for lunch at dessert view cafe. Very interesting thing about this cafe is that owner of this cafe is an excellent cook and an Archeologist. She has written few books about LEH-LADAKH region. Opposite the cafe was open dry deserted place where we drove our car like a formula 1. Wroom wroommmm. Some of us tried ATV. From here went to Stok palace, one of the current residence of king. View from this place of Leh city was incredible.
Day 5 was an exciting day. We crossed world's highest motor-able road in the world, 18380 feet. Kudos to my friends who drove themselves. Salute to Indan army to protect this place from enemies around. It was freezing cold. While entering Nubra valley my expression was oh it is so surreal everything. One can experience snow, desert, green valley, dry and open landscapes, river, dust... valley is so vast that we can't even imagine. We rode double hump camel after reaching here. We stayed in the tent and enjoyed camp fire with dumb charades.
Day 6 is to relax and enjoy the surreal beauty. Visited near by Diskit monastery which is one of the oldest and most beautiful one. View from the monastery is something different which can't be explain. Had self cooked lunch at river side. Yippeeeee noodles. Back to camp and nearby town visit. Here we witnessed one of the most beautiful moon rise of till now!! Awesome. Entire Nubra valley is no smoking zone. Only cigarettes you get is at Army canteen. Lucky to do a call at home from here since there is no mobile network in this region. It was a Raksha bandana day.
Today on day 8 we are going to pass Chang la, 17590 feet (second highest pass) and witness the extreme beauty of Pangong lake. La means pass in ladakhi language. Pangong lake is divided between India and China. 1/3 part of this lake is in India. Reached there in the evening when light was law. Had dinner in the warm canteen and playing cards. It was so cold that I needed three layers of blanket along with hot water bag. We stayed in the tent. thrrrzzzzzthrzz#$*
Beauty of Pangong lake can't be explained in words. One of the best day of an entire trip. Music, drawing and smoke at lake side. The best. Made a small stone house with my wife. If I'll get chance than surely visit this place again. Back in Leh by evening and attend rare Ladakhi wedding of our tour operator. Had alcohol after 9 days of this trip. It is not advisable to drink alcohol until one is used the conditions at high altitude. Momos and whiskey for dinner!! Good night.
Day 10. Last day of trip. Breakfast at World garden cafe and shopping all day for family and friends. Many things to buy from Leh. Clothes, fresh & dry fruits, souvenirs etc. Finally last dinner at Eclectic kitchen with beer. Back to hotel and packed our bags. Cya again Leh-Ladakh!! Julley
Winter solstice inspired me to make this map of 'my' Veluwe on a long and dark winter night.
National Park Hoge Veluwe is beautiful in every season, but I have to say that I'm indeed very much looking forward to longer days again! (and I'm still wishing for a bit of snow ;) )
