I was thinking about Mother Earth and Mother Ocean and how there must be a Mother Universe! The universe is her beautiful garden, with carpets of stars, magnificent planets, glowing galaxies and astonishing nebulae. She lives in a black hole and we’ve got it all wrong about these singularities gobbling up everything because of their gravitational pull - they are just attracting everything to them, because they want everything to be as one in harmony!
This map is based on a classic work of science fiction by Ursula K. LeGuin. The book is a philosophical and political discussion of anarchy (within a collective frame) vs. capitalism, as anarchists leave their home world of Urras to set up a practical utopia on its moon, Anarres. Two hundred years later, a physicist challenges both lifestyles in his quest to work freely.
This is mixed media, with collage, gesso, Daler Rowney inks, watercolors, gel pens, Uniball pen, and pencil, on watercolor paper. I worked at the actual size, which presented some challenges, and didn't remember the rule to leave the 1.25-inch center empty of text. Oh well...a spontaneous exercise that took me two days instead of the usual week of work, so it's all good.

Watercolor on paper. The inspiration for this illustration was a bedtime story my 4 year old told his little sister, he’s obsessed with space and my girl has a little thing for princesses, they have the most amazing imagination and I thought sharing a piece of it will make them so happy. Plus every princess deserves going to space to catch a dancing star
What would you do if you discovered a map about an interstellar chase? What if the scribbles along the top of the map describe the chase between two alien species? With eyes cast toward the heavens, you ask yourself, are we alone? How primitive are we? Where's the "Rosetta Stone" of this alien language? And did these species drink Tang and eat freeze dried ice cream?
