Oaxaca, in the south of Mexico, is one of those places where you can enjoy with all your senses.
Coloured houses, beatiful handmade things, amazing and super tasty typical food like mole negro, chapulines, tlayudas, quesillo… spectacular places like Tule, Hierve el agua, Montealbán… Nature, history, textiles, kind people… Everything in Oaxaca is authentic, coloured, special and it still retains the zapotec and mixtec essence that makes this place unique in the world. This map is dedicated to my best mexican friends Lau and Ram, with whom I shared those unforgetable days in Oaxaca.
Many years spent back and forth home, things have been moved around in the town I grew up in. People come and go and new things replace the old, but there are a few things that stay the same; the cold, cold weather us people of Lake Placid know too well and all the things one can do in a winter like that; the time when the snow starts to fade away and the sweet smell of maple syrup starts dancing around many parts of the atmosphere; then the warmth of the sunny summer days and its cozy nights; then the leaves start to grow into colors of passion and the lakes are so placid that they mirror everything that stares into them; the neighborhoods and its people; that is what I’d call ‘home’.
I drew this map mostly from memory, starting with where the Ski-jumps are, then revisiting the home I grew up in (still my home to this day), and ending with the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (being an artist, that center means a lot to me).
Though Lake Placid is often remembered for its winters, I carry warm feelings of it. And so this is a summer map - to share with you that warmth I feel when I think of this snowy place – marking some of the many things to look forward to every summer.
When you arrive to Holbox the first time, from Chiquila Harbour, you only can think in one thing: This is paradise! And actually, it is! Calm, happiness, colour and Nature wraps all this island. There you are going to find this secret essence about life that sometimes is hard to find.
Kind people, animals, ceviche, margaritas, seafood, silence, smiles, relax and streets full of colour with its cool paints... this is Holbox! But there is only one thing that cannot be compared to anything: to swim with de WhaleSharks, the biggest fish on earth. They are so big, so calm, so awesome that you'll feel you've done one of the most incredible thing in your life. And don't leave Holbox without visiting Isla Pajaros, a nature sanctuary full of birds and flamingos, and to swim in Yalahau, a freshwater lagoon that yucatan mayas says it is the true fountain of youth! Maybe even you see a jaguar!
This map is dedicated to my Mexican lovely friends (Lau, Ram, Paco, Jorge, Angela and Rodolfo) that helped me on my perfect Holbox tour.
San Francisco is a very cozy city. You can buy chowder soup in Fisherman’s Wharf, sitting beside the bay area and watching Alcatraz Island. Walking in Union Square and taking Cable Car. Passing through the small hills, there’s Golden Gate Bridge’s firework show on evening. Everything in here are wonderful and comfortable!
This is just the upper portion of a wall mural I made for a Haagen Dazs store in Jackson, WY. The original map is 12 ft wide by 7 ft high!
Please enjoy this bit of cross-Canada travel fun and history. I became quite familiar with airport codes in one of my former careers and although the days of true airline "milk runs" were gone, I think my record was five flights (yes, that's five takeoffs and five landings) in one day.
Canada is a huge country with so many great places to visit (or live)!
