This is a map of special memories from Captain's life. It features his favorite snacks (even a chicken nugget), his special toys, and even his challenges (like bathtime). Cappie was my best little pup, and he passed away Jan. 2020. This is my first ever They Draw & - project (I'm a big fan of all of them!) and I'm so glad that I finally attempted one. This was very therapeutic for me; I miss Captain every day, but making this map was a joyful process, and now I think I'm hooked. I see more drawings in my future!
Materials - prismacolor pencils, koi watercolor, sharpie fine point marker, and love (on watercolor paper)
I illustrated a travel guide of the moon, highlighting popular activities and notable sites. All mostly imagined, of course. Prominent moon legends such as the man in the moon, the moon rabbit and the werewolf make an appearance, along with space visitors Laika and flying monkeys. And robots. I modeled this illustration after atomic space age design from the 1960s and 1970s.
I wanted to create a painterly style of space map unlike a lot of the darker imagery we're used to seeing associated with space. I was also inspired by trail guides and maps with keys that showcase important information about a destination. So I decided to make a key showing which planets are hot and which are cold (and of course, which one is just right!).
As a former zookeeper and an avid stargazer, the theme for my map was an easy choice: animals in the night sky! I only had "space" to fit my favorites (there are over 40 different animal-named constellations). I hope my map will help others better recognize these star shapes when they stare into the cosmos...I feel I know them much better now myself!
