This map tells the story of my journey in Uppsala, my home away from home! I stayed in Uppsala for my studies last year - all these places are where I have always been and the route shows where I have always walked in Uppsala! Dedicating this map to all the amazing friends I have met in Uppsala (some of them are drawn in the map!) This map illustrates not only the walk but also my lovely memories. :) I have also included some elements that I love about the Swedish society and culture: the more equal parenthood and better gender equality, the LGBTQ-friendliness, the proximity with nature and animals - love it very much!
This year has made me appreciate many little things which i usually took for granted.Never knew that i would enjoy drawing birds(crows are very curious and they look at what u are drawing),binge watched many series and schitt's creek was a gem,got stuck in this never ending cycle of de-cluttering,books,cooking lessons from my grandma, calls from my family and friends and many more.Oh and also witnessed a tree crashing due to a heavy cyclone!!There were many stuffs that i wanted to illustrate but couldn't cram in here.To a wonderful 2021.
Where We Walk: Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) is lovingly called the 'City of Joy'. Here is a map of Central Kolkata comprising of all the places I visit during Christmas with my friends. The illustration depicts the iconic Victoria Memorial ( built during the early 20th century, dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria), Flurys (one of the most old and famous bakery of Kolkata serving the best cake), Oxford Bookstore (the largest bookstore in Kolkata), Peter Cat (famous for 'chelo kebabs'), Allen Park (for Christmas decor) and Bow Barracks (for home-made wine and cake and Christmas celebrations). The city is indeed a melting pot of culture providing immense joy to all citizens in terms of food, entertainment and festival. Also the yellow blue cabs, the hand-pulled rickshaws and the Christmas lights in Park Street are a sight to behold since they form a major portion of Kolkata's heritage. This is my first map illustration and I intend to showcase the very best of food, fun and celebrations of my city through this artwork of mine.
The Labor Day Bridge Walk is the most anticipated walk of the year, as you can only walk the Mackinac Bridge on that one day of the year (2020 excluded, of course). It’s not just a walk; it’s an event! Buses transport you across the bridge, then you walk back. After crossing, you get a numbered certificate, then go explore the town. Many businesses post a number in their window, and if it happens to match the number on your certificate, you win a prize! Scott and I walked it in 1994, but I took some liberties with the local destinations (some, like the Indian Museum and the Woolen Mill, were no longer operating by that date). I loved everything about Mackinaw City, particularly as a child when my sister and I were allowed to roam the streets unsupervised. I loved shopping for (and wore out many) moccasins, belts, and those fabulous “mystery bags”! Once, I even secretly purchased the jackknife I had been coveting...then sliced my finger, all of which went unnoticed. The whole town was a playground!
This map is reflecting how COVID-19 has impacted all of us. Instead of it being a huge travel season, many families have opted to stay put or try to do Thanksgiving outside or do Thanksgiving by Zoom. This map is just one family, mine, but so many are split and celebrating away from each other this year. One hopes that this a temporary situation.
This is a map of the biggest and best danish amusement parks. It captures the fun and excitement of the parks and the culture and nature of Denmark. It was created using gouache and then it is composited in photoshop. Each of the words is hand-lettered.
