I live in Uptown Chicago, a beautiful and diverse neighborhood, and a very popular filming location. I'm sharing just a few of the points of interest during a short walk from my home. Along this walk you'll also see familiar spots from the TV shows Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.
Take a walk and discover these secret courtyards called "hofjes" in Amsterdam's Jordaan neighborhood. Originally built as housing for retired nuns, widows and older single women, these charming houses surrounding courtyard gardens are wonderful places to sneak a peak. Some of them are now home to music students and artists and you may even catch a concert or open atelier on your stroll. A few of my favorite hofjes are pictured! :)
It's lovely to take a walk along the Hudson River, up on the Palisades of Weehawken. The view changes with the time of day, weather or season, and I never tire of it. Taking a long view up the river and down, seeing the Verrazano Bridge to the south and the George Washington Bridge to the north, ferries crossing, sunlight reflecting, hawks circling...or just taking a quick trek up and around Hamilton Park, I love where I live and really enjoy walking around here and getting my steps in!
I made this map of the city of Toulouse because it is the city where I lived during my student exchange for six months. I studied arts, did a lot of climbing, swimming and cycling, lived with eight friends, and also for a while with my boyfriend. I drew, painted, read, walked, played chess, photographed, laughed, danced, sang, played guitar and piano, partied, travelled; I did things I had never done and enjoyed life like never before. Toulouse is my favourite city in the whole world. I made this map digitally, and included, within the route I took when I walked from my house (“La Coloc”) to La Daurade, all my favourite places.
I live at Milan's outskirts and I love the big park that is between my town and the town next, San Donato, just before the city.
My favorite moment to be there is the early morning. There is hardly anyone, just a few people crossing the park to head somewhere. There is a small bar just in the middle of the park to enjoy a coffee or an ice cream in the summer. I love it how it is full of trees and home to rabbits and ducks. The path is 2 km long, great for clearing my head before starting the day.
I’ve been visiting Lough Key Forest Park since I was a child. It’s a truly magical place with secret tunnels, a fairy bridge, a hidden Ice House (where I imagined a witch lived!), a wishing chair and a giant Western Red Cedar tree that you can walk inside. The lake has numerous islands, one of which, Castle Island was the original home of one of the ancient kings of Ireland in the 1100s. His castle was destroyed by lightning and the castle there today was built in the early 1800s. The park also has 5 ring forts, which are fortified settlements from the Bronze Age (2000 BC). A timeless, enchanted place where I’ve spent many pleasurable days walking!
When you wanna see a breathtaking mix of old tree alleys, beautifully landscaped gardens, rare plants and historical buildings bathed in golden light then join us on a long and relaxing walk through Schönbrunn Gardens in Vienna. Schönbrunn, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs, can be translated as "Beautiful Spring" and oh yes, this couldn't be more true.
Every single time we are in Vienna, we spend hours strolling through the gardens and walking the zigzag path up to the Gloriette where you have an amazing view over the whole city. And for sure everybody will see us behaving like a Crazy Plant Couple when we enter Palm & Desert House and admire thousands and thousands of exotic cacti and plants. Not to forget: Empress Sissi's spirit will give the whole walk a very royal touch!
This is my usual stomping ground during lockdown, I must have done this walk over 100 times! There's not usually much to see, just the usual dog walkers, squirrels, joggers, and occasionally the odd helicopter carrying a vehicle!
The evening is the best time for a little walk, just around the corner. The streets are calm, the people are at home and (… that’s the best, I admit it …) they turn their lights on! So you can see all that little stories of live behind the windows. And our cat? Feely is always very enthusiastic at the at the start, but she remembers her personal limits quite quickly. So only some big Meows follow me and a reproachful but relieved cat waits for me at the end. So we draw together a map about our walk in honour to that all-day-pleasures. And – as in every good map – there’s an unknown territory: the reign of the Grey Cat! (One day we’ve been there … but that is a story for another map!)
