Situated just a few miles from the beautiful South Wales coast, we are lucky enough to have many lovely walks on our doorstep. No need for the car, in just minutes we can be surrounded by green space, walking through peaceful woodland or the picture postcard village of Merthyr Mawr, with its ancient church and cluster of perfect thatched cottages. Over the 15th century 'Dipping Bridge' where the farmers would drive their sheep through the two parapets into the river for an annual dip - there is always something new to see. The much newer 'Swing Bridge' will take you on to the picturesque river crossing at Ogmore Castle - still marked by a series of ancient stepping stones that you can cross if the tide is right! If the river is too high, we can walk on to Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes - home to the 'Big Dipper' the highest dune in Wales and if we're feeling particularly energetic, a walk through the dunes with all its wildlife, will see us reach the sea at Ogmore-By-Sea and a much-deserved cuppa, before picking a route for the walk home! The kids love these places! Look them up - they do exist - I wish I had time to squeeze in more! Next time!
I live in Uptown Chicago, a beautiful and diverse neighborhood, and a very popular filming location. I'm sharing just a few of the points of interest during a short walk from my home. Along this walk you'll also see familiar spots from the TV shows Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.
Take a walk and discover these secret courtyards called "hofjes" in Amsterdam's Jordaan neighborhood. Originally built as housing for retired nuns, widows and older single women, these charming houses surrounding courtyard gardens are wonderful places to sneak a peak. Some of them are now home to music students and artists and you may even catch a concert or open atelier on your stroll. A few of my favorite hofjes are pictured! :)
It's lovely to take a walk along the Hudson River, up on the Palisades of Weehawken. The view changes with the time of day, weather or season, and I never tire of it. Taking a long view up the river and down, seeing the Verrazano Bridge to the south and the George Washington Bridge to the north, ferries crossing, sunlight reflecting, hawks circling...or just taking a quick trek up and around Hamilton Park, I love where I live and really enjoy walking around here and getting my steps in!
I made this map of the city of Toulouse because it is the city where I lived during my student exchange for six months. I studied arts, did a lot of climbing, swimming and cycling, lived with eight friends, and also for a while with my boyfriend. I drew, painted, read, walked, played chess, photographed, laughed, danced, sang, played guitar and piano, partied, travelled; I did things I had never done and enjoyed life like never before. Toulouse is my favourite city in the whole world. I made this map digitally, and included, within the route I took when I walked from my house (“La Coloc”) to La Daurade, all my favourite places.
I am very lucky to live in Bexley, one of the greenest boroughs of London. Throughout lockdown I have gone on (almost) daily walks in many of these green spaces and I always see things in the sky that inspire me. My map pays homage to everything I have seen in the skies whilst out on my walks. I've have also included the distance each object is from earth to give it some perspective.
This map shows a typical urban hike I might take from my apartment on the island of Södermalm in Stockholm, Sweden. I start with the overlook at Monteliusvägen, continue through Mariatorget, the square in my neighborhood, then I continue over to the lookout from Skinnarviks park, where you can see Stadshuset (city hall) and the apartments along Norr Mälarstrand. From there, I head to the allotment gardens located in Tanto park, then a stop by Fabrique bakery where I might pick up a tasty cinnamon bun or fresh loaf of levain bread for an afternoon fika (coffee break). On my way back to my apartment, if it is the weekend, a stop by Röde Orm to pick up a pizza dough for homemade pizza is a must!
This map tells the story of my journey in Uppsala, my home away from home! I stayed in Uppsala for my studies last year - all these places are where I have always been and the route shows where I have always walked in Uppsala! Dedicating this map to all the amazing friends I have met in Uppsala (some of them are drawn in the map!) This map illustrates not only the walk but also my lovely memories. :) I have also included some elements that I love about the Swedish society and culture: the more equal parenthood and better gender equality, the LGBTQ-friendliness, the proximity with nature and animals - love it very much!
