New York State Central Leatherstocking Region by Melissa Washburn
Valparaiso, IN, USI grew up in New York. The *other* New York - the vast expanse of farmland and wilderness that comprises almost everything outside New York City. The town I grew up in, in Fulton County (just northeast of the counties on the map), was the center of the leather and glove making industry during World War II and into the 1950s and '60s. I always assumed that the Leatherstocking Region took its name from the leather trade. However, instead it comes from James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, a series of books that includes The Last of the Mohicans.

Home in Poland by Olivia Obrebski
Massachusetts , USI hand drew this piece with watercolors and ink pens. On the left half of this piece is a geometrically designed map of Poland. In the middle is the flag of Poland. The right half of the piece has four places that are important to me. The names are written in both English and Polish, and beside them are descriptions of why they are important to me. This piece represents my heritage and origins because I am the only member of my family who was not born in Poland and most of my family still lives there.
