This place is special to me because it's where my great aunt Hazel lived in 1921 when she was 19 years old. During that year, she ran a beauty salon and kept a journal of her life in town. Through my research using newspapers from the day and stories from the journal, I’ve gotten to know the town pretty well. These are my recommendations if you visit Austin, MN in 1921—sorry, I’m still trying to locate the speakeasies.
This place is special to me because when I moved to LA in my 20s, going to “The Strip” was the ultimate night out. Not only did I get to see tons of amazing bands here, but the vibe of the area holds a unique electricity. Despite Los Angeles’ characteristic sprawl, this area has much to love for any rocker in a concentrated place. A fun night out on the Sunset Strip consisted of going to the Rainbow Room for pizza and pre-show drinks—where you might have a rock-celebrity sighting—then going off to a show at the Roxy or the Viper Room. After a night of dancing, drinking, and meeting kindred music souls, you could go grab a hot dog at the famous Carney’s. For any music lover living in or visiting Los Angeles, the Sunset Strip is a must-see place!
This place is special to me because yes, I am a banana slug! I went to university in Santa Cruz and lived there a few years after as well. There is lots to do in this cute town - hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and surfing. Of course you can also relax on the beach or ride the Giant Dipper rollercoaster at the Boardwalk. There are also lots of tasty eats in town which I didn't include on this map. I guess I need to do another one! :)
Chennai happens to be the city where I had spent my childhood vacations.Marina beach, the light house and the Kapaleeswarar temple were amazing childhood memories. The second stint was when I was working and the time I got to spend with my grand parents.I used to go for walks with my grandma at Nageswara Rao park which is filled with greenery.Crossword and Hindustan Trading Company are like amusement parks for the book lover and stationary freak in me.And during summers Ibaco ice cream parlor is heaven to the rescue.Do try their rocky road flavor if you are a chocolate lover :)
As a vegetarian in Providence I have plenty of wonderful options for a meal out, including numerous restaurants that cater solely to vegetarians! However, my husband is an omnivore so it's extra special when I find a place where we can both get a meal we're craving. I left out my favorite exclusively vegetarian restaurants—they can get a map all their own!
There are so many good choices around here that I had to constrain them to an area of two square miles in order to cap the list at ten. This is an ode to dishes that have captured my heart.
This place is special to me because it reminds me of my childhood. When my family moved out of state, my sister and I still remained close to our mutual best friend from our hometown in upstate NY. Though we didn’t see each other often, we could always count on spending one magical weekend together in the summer! Every summer my sister and I would spend a few weeks visiting our grandparents just south of Lake George, NY. Conveniently, our best friends’ grandparents had a cabin just north of Lake George. So naturally, Lake George became our spot! Martha’s Dandee Cream was always the drop off/ pick up spot, and from there it was a weekend filled with mini golf, theme parks, arcades, and kitsch statues (it was’t until years later that I realized not every area has these weird old theme park statues running rampant)! Now that we are adults and have cars of our own, our meeting spots have changed, but every once in awhile a drive through the village of Lake George is on the agenda and it’s retro charm never disappoints!
This place is special to me because for the world, it’s a major tourist destination but for me, it was a short term workplace that made me explore the place beyond its beaches and churches. All the sights marked have been discovered on my way to the office or to the printing shop
, or just grew out of the need to escape on a fine weekend. And they’re my favourite spots to show-off my tourist friends visiting Goa the second or third time around. The city feels mine. Like I’ve known it for longer.
This place is special to me because, it is the small, charming part of the city I like to escape to. As a kid, I practiced my bike riding skills here, in my teen years I used to visit the beaches and the parks with friends, as an artist I still like to take inspiration from the buildings and streets. I enjoy the sights, history and multicultural elements. The Istanbul Biennale usually takes place on locations listed here on the map. Sometimes I like to sail here or just take the ferry for 30 minutes to enjoy some fresh seafood. There are many things to explore and enjoy when you visit the Büyükada in Istanbul.
This place is special because talks to me about the mediterranean people and our way of life. Sometimes it’s and easy path through the trees, the most quiet place on earth and it’s all calm and peace of mind. Sometimes it’s narrow and hard and climb it’s a tough thing. This is a strange windy brave coast, with only a few small beaches to get some rest, but it’s worthy to do the walk and celebrate every stop with some fresh good food and nice chat around the table. Enjoy the way!
I live in a beautiful coastal town on the east coast of Australia, 4 hours north of Sydney. There are lots of walks and places to see amazing native vegetation in the surrounding areas but my favourite is the one that follows the coast, and in the right time of the year you can even spot the annual whale migration.
This place is special to me because it’s charm and delicious food stole my heart. One of the first things I saw in Charleston was a happy family of dolphins swimming in the harbor, which is something I had never seen before. New experiences like the wildlife made me feel connected to this small city. As we looked over the menu at Fleet Landing I saw a heron outside who was also looking for its dinner. I wanted to make this map highlighting the food we had in Charleston because of the people behind the food who cared about what they cooked and the experience they provided. The restaurants and landmarks I illustrated are just some of the many great places Charleston has to offer.
This place is special to me because it's my secret winter escape. OK, maybe not so secret as thousands of snowbirds have discovered it as well. I love Tucson not only for the fun breweries, tasty eats, farmers markets, cool shops, and fascinating historical sights but the city is surrounded by nature. To the north you can hike at Catalina State Park and Sabino Canyon, to the east and west you'll find both sections of Saguaro National Park. When hiking you may be surprised to find the desert teems with life like hummingbirds, phainopeplas, hawks, roadrunners, ringtail cats and javelinas. The cactus wren pictured here is the state bird of Arizona. Hope you like my map! :) Come explore the desert!
