The crew of Serenity travelled all across The Verse, taking any job that would come their way - All while avoiding the Alliance. By picking up a few strays along the way, they learned the Alliance's dark secret out on Miranda.  Firefly is one of my favorite sci-fi worlds - I love the mix of Asian and Old West cultures, plus all the curious backstories we will never know.  Here is a map of the The Verse and a few of my favorite places the crew of Serenity visited.
