Nara, a city near Kyoto, is a perfect city for day-trip. As Japan's capital city during Nara Period, it contains many historical Buddhism temples (including Todaiji - world's largest wooden building). Deer wander freely around near Nara Park.

Tourists usually arrive at one of the railway stations (JR or Kintetsu), and then walk around the east part of the city to visit temples and deers. There are some Nara foods along the way.
