Sara DrakeFremantle, Western Australia, AU
Artist, Sculptor and illustrator, creating detailed, colourful and humorous 3D maps and globes. I specialise in personalised and large scale maps. I work and send maps all around the world.
I spent my childhood in Asia, went to college in the UK, painted my way around Europe and now live in Australia.
The maps are a unique blend of painting and sculpture. The bases are sculpted and covered in papier mache and the details are hand carved from a variety of found and recycled materials materials, including balsa wood, foam, wire and beads.
Please contact me if you would like a handmade map created or have a project you would like to discuss.

This map illustrates some of Perth's most beautiful beaches and some of the activities the local inhabitants get up to! From left to right, we head from the 'clothing optional' beach and army base at Swanbourne, to the beautiful old Art Deco Surf Life Saving Club at Cottesloe, where the tourists and fashionistas frolic in the surf and eat at the local cafes. Finally we pass through scenic Mosman Beach and end up chilling with the dog walkers and kite surfers at Leighton and Port Beach.
This map of Ogunquit,Maine was created for a client, who grew up moving around a lot - but found this small seaside town to be the one constant in her life. It features many of the places close to her heart, including Perkins Cove, the Art Museum, the bakery and the beach!
This map takes you away from the beaches and tourist hot spots in the South of Bali and shows you something of the more traditional life in the island's centre and North Coast. You can see many of the beautiful, terraced rice fields and Hindu temples and the Balinese people going about their everyday lives. The map is an amazing mix of painting, illustration and sculpture that has evolved over many years and is unique to the artist.
This map covers the Swiss half of Lake Geneva or Lac Lèman. It stretches from the city of Geneva in the west, with the Headquarters of the UN and Red Cross and the amazing Hadron Collider, buried underground at CERN. At the eastern end of the lake is Montreux with its music festival and statue of Freddie Mercury and the beautiful, lakeside Chateau de Chillon. In the centre of the lake is Lausanne, home to the Olympics and the Chateau de Vufflens. This clip is part of a much larger map of the whole of Switzerland and is a unique combination of painting and sculpture, with all the details hand carved from balsa wood and painted with acrylic.
